Patna. There has been a big disclosure in the special intensive revision (SIR) of the voter list in Bihar. The first phase of revision has revealed that about 35 lakh voters of the state are missing. After this, questions are being raised about the purity of the voter list. At the same time, questions are also being raised about the SIR to be held across the country.
The Election Commission is doing a thorough revision of voter list in Bihar. It has revealed in the first phase figures that about 35 lakh voters are either missing or have migrated permanently from their registered address. Political parties are questioning the correctness of the voter list. After revision, the names of these 35 lakh voters will be removed from the list. Inability to detect such an important part of voters has highlighted possible systemic issues in voter registration maintenance.
The Election Commission had said on June 24 that under constitutional duty and for the integrity and security of the voter list, this will be done in intensive revision of the voter list. Now the Election Commission has started it. The order issued by the Election Commission said that maintaining the integrity of the voter list is a basic need for a fair and free election. Under the Public Representative Act, 1950 and Registration of Electoral Rules, 1960, information and methods of preparing voter list have been given.
On June 24 last month, the Election Commission directed the Special Voter Intensive Revision (SIR) in Bihar. It is to be between 25 June to 26 July 2025. The Election Commission says that for the purpose of removing voters registered in fake, disqualified and two places in the voter list. At the same time, the opposition parties allege that the Election Commission is investigating the citizenship of the people from the back door through this special intensive revision. At the same time, the opposition alleges that under its guise, the right to vote can be taken away from the people on a large scale.
However, the Election Commission has assured that if a person is out of the voter list, it does not mean that his citizenship is over. The Election Commission has also said that under the law and constitution it has the right to ask for documents related to citizenship, so that people can get ‘franchise’.
