New Delhi . Before the Assembly Elections, Mamata Banerjee has intensified politics by raising the question of Bengali Asmita. Mamta accused the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) of spreading linguistic terrorism against Bengalis. The West Bengal CM said in a threatening tone that if the BJP does not stop discrimination on the basis of language, then the Trinamool Congress will start a second language movement and the identity and language fight will continue till the BJP loses the elections.
Addressing the Martyr’s Day rally in Kolkata, Mamta called for defeating the BJP in the 2026 assembly elections and eventually out of power at the Center. The Trinamool Congress (TMC) chief announced, “If needed, he will start a second language movement against BJP’s terrorism on Bangla language … July 27 will begin a movement against Bengal, Bengalis, Bangla language attacks and ‘language worries’ in Bengal from July 27.”
Let me tell you! The first language movement took place in 1952 in the then East Bengal (now Bangladesh), where people demanded that Bangla be made one of the official languages of Pakistan. The United Nations declared 21 February as International Mother Language Day in honor of the Bangla language movement.
Accusing the Bengalis of harassing Bengalis in BJP-wide states, Mamta said that efforts are being made to eradicate the identity of the community. He said that whether it is NRC (National Citizen Register) notice, removal of names from the voter list or to keep Bengalis in custody camps. The BJP is constantly targeting Bengalis. The TMC chief said, “In 2019, he (BJP) broke the statue of Ishwar Chandra Vidyasagar. He insulted the Bengali great men and also saw the results. Now, they are issuing notifications to remove the names of Bengalis from voter lists. Bengalis are being put in custody camps in BJP ruled states.”
