New Delhi: The situation seems to be deteriorating after the torrential rains in Beijing, the capital of China. The Meteorological Department has issued a warning of landslides and debris falling for 10 out of 16 districts in the city. Also, there has been a possibility of sudden floods in the hilly areas. This warning is not just an estimate but on the basis of the experience of the past years and the latest situation. In the last few years, new records of rain have been made in northern China and this time also the situation is seen.
The situation is even more worrisome in the industrial city of Baoding adjacent to Beijing. It recorded about 448.7 mm of rain in just 24 hours, which is equal to the rain in this area almost the whole year. Yi area of western Baoding suddenly flooded due to heavy rains, causing electricity and many roads and bridges were damaged. In some villages, the situation is so bad that the administration had to expel about 19,500 people from their homes and send it to safe places.
According to the Meteorological Department, this rain is something similar in 2023 during a powerful storm in Beijing. At that time the 140 -year record was broken in the capital. Seeing the recent situation, the administration is gearing up and heavy relief material is being sent. The central government includes 23,000 relief kits, including blankets and emergency goods. North is sent to the affected areas of China.
Constant faster rain in China is not just the story of Beijing or Baoding, but the whole country is under the grip of a big seasonal storm. The rain has become so vicious that the old and dilapidated flood security system of China has now stood in front of the challenge. The government is afraid that if the situation worsens, millions of people may be homeless, and an agricultural economy of 280 lakh crores can also be ruined.
Scientists believe that due to global warming, the incidents of heavy rains are increasing in the northern and usually dry areas of China. In 2023, Hebei province received 26% more rainfall than normal. This trend is still going on, due to which the large population there can be vulnerable to natural disasters like floods and landslides. The Beijing administration has appealed to the people to be cautious, especially people living in hilly areas. Where the water has been filled, rescue teams are stationed and there is a continuous monitoring. In areas where there is a possibility of landslide, a warning has already been issued.
