The city is located about 20 km from the border, yet the voice of the blasts is reaching there, which tells how tense the situation is on the border.
These clashes are happening at a time when diplomatic efforts have intensified regarding the possibilities of ceasefire between the two countries. However, on Sunday morning shelling is clear that the situation at the ground level is still very critical.
The border dispute between Thailand and Cambodia has been going on for years. There is a dispute mainly about areas where historical temples are located. Both countries claim these sites.
Actually, there is a dispute between the two countries about the 817 km long boundary line. Especially, there has been more tension about the ‘Preh Beyer’ temple declared by UNESCO, the World Heritage Site. In 1962, the temple was handed over to Cambodia by the International Court of Court (ICJ), but Thailand did not fully accept that decision.
