Coup in Pakistan: A new debate in Pakistan’s politics has gained momentum. In some media reports and discussions, it was being claimed that President Asif Ali Zardari was being pressurized to step down and Army Chief General Asim Munir himself wants to become President. However, these speculations have been rejected by Prime Minister Shahbaz Sharif.
In an interview on Friday, Sharif clarified that General Munir has never expressed any desire to become President and no such plan has been made. He said that he, he, has a strong mutual relationship between Zardari and the Chief of Army Staff and a strong mutual relationship based on the national interest.
Accused of plotting enemy forces
A day before this statement, Pakistan Home Minister Mohsin Naqvi said on the social media platform x that wrong information is being spread against Zardari, Sharif and Munir. Some external forces are behind him. Naqvi alleged that this propaganda is happening in collaboration with foreign agencies to destabilize Pakistan. He also reiterated that neither there has been any talk of resignation from President Zardari nor is there any plan to become the President of the Army Chief.
Let me tell you, General Asim Munir was appointed as the Army Chief of Pakistan in 2022. Initially, his term was three years. Which was later extended by five years. At the same time, Asif Ali Zardari was given the responsibility of the presidency last year. Which was given in return for support to make Shahbaz Sharif the Prime Minister. The recent explanation of the Prime Minister has put a stop to these political speculation. However, it is still difficult to say how durable political stability in Pakistan will remain.
